Spinal Cord Injuries

Trauma that causes damage to the cells in the spinal cord, or that severs the nerve tracts are called Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI).  SCI's are most commonly contusion/bruising of the cord, and compression which is pressure on the cord.

Injuries can also include severing or tearing the nerves (as caused by gun shots).
Spinal Cord Injuries can often lead to paralysis and numbness.  It can lead to reflex issues, breathing issues, bowel and bladder control issues.  Muscle spasms, sensitivity, pain, or sexual problems may also develop.  Secondary medical issues can include bed sores, bladder infections, and lung infections.

For people under 65, motor vehicle crashes are the main causes.  For people over 65 falls are most commonly the cause.  Other causes are workplace injuries, diving injuries, electric shocks, bullet and/or stab wounds, excessive twisting of the body, sports injuries.
