Brain Injury

Brain Injury:

According to the CDC ( http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/tbi.htm ):
A (TBI) traumatic brain injury is caused by trauma, including penetrating the head, a blow to the head, or a jolt to the head. Some jolts may cause TBI, some may not. If someone does suffer a TBI, it can range from mild to severe.

About 1.4 million people incur a TBI each year. 50,000 die, 235,000 require hospitalization, 1.1 million visit an ER and are released.

Children under 14 years of age incur 2685 deaths each year, 37,000 hospitalizations per year, and 435,000 ER visits.

There are no estimates on the number of people who receive a TBI each year and don't get medical treatment.

Consequences

The CDC claims that about 5.3 million people in the USA have long-term/lifelong needs for assistance in daily life resulting from traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

TBI can have varying effects on people. These can include emotions, thinking, language, sensations.

Epilepsy can be triggered/caused by TBI. It increases the risk for Alzheimer's, Parkinsons, and other age related brain abnormalities.

Out of all TBI's, about 75% are mild (concussions or other mild TBI).

If a persons suffers mild TBI's repeatedly, the can cause cognitive and/or neurological problems. If they occur in fast succession (several in a month), they can be fatal or catastrophic.

Causes

Most TBI are caused by falls, automobile accidents, striking objects/struck by object, and assaults. These make up about 78% of all TBI's.
